Hello and welcome to the first installment of our four part series, ‘Discovering, discussing and reviewing’! In this 4-part series I, an exchange student, will explore the different opportunities for exercise, right here in the wonderful city of Örebro. Today’s episode will focus on the Campus gym.
Well, what exactly is the campus gym?
The campus gym is a sport/fitness facility right here on campus! It is part of a bigger sport
initiative, called ‘campusgymmet’. Campusgymmet offers a wide range of sport activities, like
paddling and group training. However, the focus for today on the gym itself. You might have
seen its entrance already. It is conveniently placed next to the track field and Långhuset:
How can I get access, and what does it cost?
Gaining access to the campus gym might feel a bit overwhelming at first. The Campus gym offers a free one-week trial. This trial is strongly recommended, as it usually results in the option to prolong your subscription right at the service desk. However, if you want to sign up online, we created some easy steps for you to follow!
1. Go to the product page
(https://campusgymmet.gymsystem.se/member#/shop?tab=shop&site=1).
2. Select ‘medlemskamp’ first (one time purchase).
3. Select either a month, 4 month, 6 month or 12 month subscription (you can choose to pay upfront or do it in monthly payments).
4. Fill in your personal information.
5. Collect your access card and enjoy!
The campus gym has varying prices, depending on the length of your subscription. Shorter subscriptions (like one month) cost more per month than a 12-month subscription. Fo exchange students, either 4 months or 6 months is probably going to suit you best. The 4- month subscription is 309 Kr per month, with 6 months being 249 Kr a month. Compared to the other gyms in the Orebro area (which will be discussed in more detail in a later episode), the campus gym is relatively affordable. Additionally, there are also special deals, like 15% off if you are a member of Orebro Studentkår. All in all, it is a more affordable option, compared to other gyms which often cost triple as much.
What are the experiences with the campus gym?
Now comes the big question, is the gym worth it? The answer depends on what you’re looking for! Here are a few insights based on interviews with students:
Is it crowded? Based on the answers of students, No! Most students mentioned that usually, there is more than enough space to do your exercises. If you want a more precise insight, you can use the campus gymmet app to get a direct estimation of the amount of people using the gym right now.
Is it friendly for non-swedish speaking students? You shouldn’t be worried if your Duolingo lessons haven’t paid off yet. Most signs have an English translation, and most if not all of the staff can speak English. It is therefore quite accessible for international students.
How are the facilities? While the gym offers all the basics, it’s clear that it’s a university facility rather than a commercial one. Some of the equipment might feel outdated/sparse, compared to that of a more modern gym. If you have specific training goals, it’s worth visiting (or using the week trial) beforehand to see if they have the equipment you need. Other amenities like a locker room are, of course, provided.
How do the costs compare? Like mentioned earlier, the price, compared to other gyms, is quite Good. A broad choice of subscription options, combined with the discount, means the campus gym offers deals you will not always find in the other gyms in Örebro.
How is the location? Based on the answers we received, Ideal. If you live on campus (which is most often the case for exchange students), it will take you no longer than 5 minutes to get to the gym. No other gym will be able to compete with a 5-minute walking distance. The short distance and easy access was also the most common reason people chose the campus gym.
Overall, the Campus gym is a (relatively) affordable, accessible Gym that is not very busy. To anyone who wants to have a relaxed gym experience, or is looking to start up their habits again, the campus Gym is a safe bet. For people who have more specialized training goals, or are more used to the most modern/advanced equipment, you might have to consider looking at other gyms. Either way, we wish you good luck and happy exercising!
